New York's plan to consolidate psychiatric facilities is running into opposition from families and some lawmakers.
The state Office of Mental Health plans to reduce the number of facilities in the state from 24 to 15 to save money.
N.Y. lawmakers protest plans to close psych centers
Among those on the closing list is the Western New York Children's Psychiatric Center in the Buffalo suburb of West Seneca. The child patients would be moved into the Buffalo Psychiatric Center, which currently serves only adults.
State Sen. Patrick Gallivan and Assemblyman Mickey Kearns were among those taking part in a demonstration at the facility Friday, urging the state to keep it open.
The Office of Mental Health has said it can offer the same level of care at the Buffalo facility.
