WellCare provides managed-care services to individuals enrolled in Medicare and Medicaid. The company had 2.8 million enrollees as of September 2013. As a result of the Windsor deal, it will now have customers in all 50 states; Windsor operated in Arkansas, Mississippi, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The acquisition caps a busy year for WellCare. The company has acquired other Medicaid carriers: Missouri Care, a subsidiary of Aetna, and the South Carolina Medicaid business of UnitedHealth Group.
WellCare is also in the process of acquiring Healthfirst Health Plan of New Jersey. That deal is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2014.
