The average salary of the 1,126 respondents was $113,269, and the median was $95,000. Almost 72% reported getting a raise, but less than half (46.8%) said they got a bonus. The median bonus was around 3.5% of the respondent's annual salary.
Respondents in executive management reported average raises of 6.1% and average salary of $189,435. Department heads reported average raises of 4.3% and an average salary of $109,478. Professionals in staff positions reported average raises of 3.7% and salaries averaging $86,536.
Male respondents reported average raises of 4.75%, boosting their average salary to $130,800. Women—who represented 56% of the respondents—reported average raises of 3.71% and an average salary of $99,523.
Health IT professionals in the Mid-Atlantic states of New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania had the highest average salary ($127,549), and those in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee had the lowest ($95,243).
The respondents were asked to report their salaries as of Jan. 1, 2013. The surveys were e-mailed to the 52,000 HIMSS members as well as health IT professionals for whom HIMSS had an e-mail address on file, and they were collected between August and October 2013.
