How often, Outliers wonders, did 007 slur his name?

James Bond, a man with a habit of repeating himself, drank the equivalent of 31 martinis a week, on average, according to well-read researchers in the light-hearted Christmas edition of the medical journal BMJ.

That amount—four times what an adult male should imbibe—does not include days when Bond was incarcerated or in a hospital. Even after taking those days into account, Bond consumed what would amount to 22 martinis a week. At his worst, in one day he consumed two bottles of wine, three vodka martinis, six pints of beer and a double, neat.

Bond's job was high risk and so was his drinking. “In Casino Royale, he drinks over 39 units (of alcohol) before engaging in a high-speed car chase, losing control and spending 14 days in the hospital,” wrote the authors, Drs. Graham Johnson, Indra Neil Guha and Patrick Davies. The trio of Bond analysts are colleagues at Nottingham University Hospitals in England.

His alcohol consumption also left him highly likely to suffer from depression, cirrhosis of the liver, impotence and other conditions. “Should he not be 'killed in action,' his risk of developing many serious pathologies is high,” they wrote.

The review of 14 Ian Fleming novels concluded Bond wouldn't live past 56.

“Although we appreciate the societal pressures to consume alcohol when working with international terrorists and high-stakes gamblers, we would advise Bond be referred for further assessment of his alcohol intake,” they prescribed.
