COO takes president's spot at Adventist Health

Who: Scott Reiner, 49

Promoted to: President of Adventist Health, a faith-based system based in Roseville, Calif., which operates 18 hospitals in three Western states and Hawaii.

Currently: Executive VP and COO, roles he has held since 2010.

Replacing: Robert Carmen, 67, who will retire April 1, 2014, after 44 years with the system.

Rose from within: Reiner's previous leadership positions with Adventist include CEO of Glendale (Calif.) Adventist Medical Center. Also was senior VP of Adventist, starting in 2006.

Focus on strategic plan: “There are at least two critical components: One is physician alignment and the other is care transformations,” Reiner said. He said Adventist is working to reduce variation in how it delivers care, including developing clinical best practices from ambulatory to post-acute settings.

Moving from volume to value: Adventist is making three moves toward risk-based contracting: Population health management through its own self-funded plan for employees; partnerships with other providers to develop a narrow-network contracting vehicle; and a Medicare Advantage plan expected to be in operation by the end of 2014.
