Gunman opens fire at Reno hospital, killing a doctor and himself

A doctor was shot to death Tuesday in a medical office building on the campus of Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. The gunman wounded two others and then killed himself, police said.

The victim was identified Wednesday as Dr. Charles Garo Gholdoian, a urologist with Urology Nevada. Police previously said a doctor was among the wounded survivors. The gunman had not been named as of Wednesday afternoon.

"Urology Nevada is shocked and saddened by the events that occurred," the practice said in a written statement. "At this time we have no information as to why these terrible events occurred, and we are cooperating with the authorities in every way possible to learn more."

The shooting happened about 2 p.m. on the third floor of the Center for Advanced Medicine building on the campus, which also houses a wound care center and a dialysis clinic.

“We still don't have a solid identity yet, but we are working several leads on who he is," Reno Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson said about the shooter during a briefing outside the hospital Tuesday evening.

Police locked down the campus and searched the building room by room, police said, although the gunman was believed to have acted alone. By late afternoon, the hospital had returned to normal business operations.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families,” Renown Health said in a message posted to its website.

The attack follows two recent outbursts of violence in U.S. hospitals. Last month a man stabbed four people at Good Shepherd Medical Center's ambulatory surgery center in Longview, Texas, killing a nurse and a visitor.

About two weeks earlier, the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin was locked down while police searched for and then shot and subdued a man wanted on felony warrant who allegedly brandished a gun as he fled down a hallway.
