    HOSPITALS, SYSTEMS

Stephen Reynolds is retiring from his longtime position as president and CEO of Baptist Memorial Health Care, Memphis, Tenn., effective in May.

The system named Jason Little, 39, currently executive VP and COO, to become its fifth president and CEO. Reynolds, 67, arrived at Baptist in 1971 as an administrative resident and became president and CEO in 1994.

During his tenure, Baptist opened two hospitals in Memphis and one in Jonesboro, Ark. It also saw the launch of the Baptist Medical Group, which the system describes as one of the largest physician management organizations in the region.

Little joined Baptist in 2002 and served as administrator and CEO of three Baptist hospitals before he was promoted to senior VP and metro market leader.

Dr. Margo Hilliard Alford, an executive with Harris Health System, is retiring Dec. 27 after 25 years with the Houston-based organization.

Hilliard Alford, a pediatrician, first joined Harris Health System in 1988 as administrator of Jefferson Davis Hospital. She then spent 17 years as the first administrator of the healthcare system's Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital. Most recently, Hilliard Alford, 69, served as senior VP of Harris Health System's Community Health and Wellness, while also continuing an appointment as assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, or UTHealth.

Steven Burkett is Erlanger Health System's new senior VP of physician services. Burkett, 62, joined Chattanooga, Tenn.-based Erlanger on Dec. 2. He most recently was CEO of the Burkett Group, a Memphis, Tenn.-based consulting firm that he founded.

Dr. Loren Hughes became president of HSHS Medical Group, a new position with the affiliate of Springfield, Ill.-based Hospital Sisters Health System, effective Dec. 9. Hughes, 57, previously was medical director for the Southern Illinois division of the medical group, which includes 250 physicians and other clinicians.

    W. Peter Daniels, who merged himself out of a job as CEO of Elmhurst (Ill.) Memorial Healthcare this year, has been named COO of hospital-based services at the Cook County (Ill.) Health & Hospitals System. He is tasked with improving inpatient care from the emergency room to the maternity ward at the financially challenged health system. Daniels, 59, also is in charge of outpatient care at Cook County Health's two hospitals. After negotiations broke down with Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial HealthCare, Elmhurst began talks with Edward Hospital and Health Services. Daniels resigned from Elmhurst Memorial in March before a binding deal was reached. Elmhurst Memorial became part of Naperville, Ill.-based Edward on July 1.

Former Stryker Corp. executive Stephen MacMillan was named president and CEO of Hologic, a Bedford, Mass.-based company that develops and manufactures medical imaging systems for women's health. MacMillan, 50, resigned in February 2012 from Kalamazoo, Mich.-based medical-device manufacturer Stryker. He joined the company in 2003 as president and COO. He became CEO in 2005 and chairman in 2010. At Hologic, he succeeds Jack Cumming, who had been the company's top executive from 2001 to 2009 and returned in July upon the departure of Robert Cascella.

    DEATHS

Hawaii Health Department Director Loretta Fuddy died in a plane crash Dec. 11. Fuddy was on a small plane that crashed into the ocean on the way to Honolulu from Kalaupapa, a remote peninsula on the north side of Molokai island.

“Her knowledge was vast, her counsel and advice always given from her heart as much as from her storehouse of experience,” Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie told the Associated Press.

Fuddy had been director of the health department since March 2011 and previously was chief of the department's Family Health Services division.

Eight other passengers, including Deputy Director Keith Yamamoto, survived the crash.
