Adventist Health President and CEO Robert Carmen will retire from his post next year after 44 years with the Roseville, Calif.-based health system.
Adventist's board accepted the 67-year-old Carmen's retirement Tuesday. He has served as president and CEO since October 2007, when he replaced Donald Ammon, who likewise had spent more than four decades with 18-hospital Adventist.
Carmen's retirement date is set for April 1, 2014, and the board expects to reach a decision on his successor by the end of the year.
“Bob is a leader who has successfully navigated many challenges and shifts within this industry,” Adventist board chairman Ricardo Graham said in a news release. “Adventist Health has proved itself a dynamic organization, which has benefited from Bob's lengthy tenure. He has made tremendous contributions to Adventist Health and to his credit has assembled an accomplished senior leadership team to continue this legacy of service.”
Adventist officials credit Carmen with leading the system's shift toward delivering more ambulatory services, including the formation of Adventist Health Physician Services, and supporting rural health clinics.
Before becoming CEO, Carmen was the system's executive VP/COO for eight years. He also served as president of Adventist's Southern California division, overseeing five hospitals and a foundation. He joined Adventist as an occupational therapist.
