Mountain States Health Alliance in Johnson City, Tenn., has tapped an executive from Health Management Associates as its new president and CEO.
Alan Levine, 46, will step into the role on Jan. 6. He now serves as senior VP and Florida group president for the for-profit chain, which recently announced a takeover agreement with Community Health Systems. Levine was on the frontlines of HMA's response to allegations that it pressured physicians to boost their admissions numbers, which were the subject of a critical “60 Minutes” segment in December.
He joined HMA in 2010 after serving as secretary of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals and senior health policy adviser to Gov. Bobby Jindal. He came to Louisiana from Florida, where he was secretary of the state's Agency for Health Care Administration. Before that, he was deputy chief of staff and senior health policy adviser to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
