Maupin to retire at the end of the next school year and other moves

John Maupin Jr., president of the Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, will retire at the end of the next school year and, effective July 1, 2014, Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice will replace him. Montgomery Rice, 51, was named executive VP and dean in 2011, and she will retain the title of dean in her new role next year. In 2010, the Morehouse board approved a leadership structure change that called for merging the roles of president and dean upon Maupin's retirement. Maupin, a dentist, took over as president in July 2006. Montgomery Rice will become the first African-American woman to lead a free-standing medical school in the U.S., Morehouse said in a news release announcing the appointment.

On July 1, Dr. Steven Steinhubl joined San Diego-based Scripps Health as director of its digital medicine program. Steinhubl, 53, will oversee the scientific evaluation and clinical validation of mobile health devices and applications through the Scripps Translational Science Institute, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. Steinhubl, a cardiologist, clinical researcher and former pharmaceutical company executive, most recently served as director of cardiovascular wellness and a clinician-scientist at the Geisinger Health System based in Danville, Pa. … Alameda Health System, Oakland, Calif., named Dr. William Peruzzi its new CMO. Peruzzi, whose age wasn't provided, previously served as vice chief medical officer and executive medical director of critical-care services at the University of Miami (Fla.) Hospital. In Oakland, he succeeds interim CMO Dr. Kathleen Clanon at the Alameda County-operated safety net provider.

A year after leaving Seattle Children's Hospital for Boston, Drexel DeFord has left his position as CIO of Steward Health Care System and joined Dallas-based venture capital firm Next Wave Health as a principal adviser. DeFord, a former chief technology officer for the U.S. Air Force health system, was board chair of the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives in 2012. He was CIO at Seattle Children's for four years before joining Steward in July 2012. Julie Berry, Steward's CTO since 2011, succeeded DeFord as CIO. … Dallas-based Anthelio Healthcare Solutions, which provides information technology and business process services to hospitals, physician practices and other providers, named Asif Ahmad CEO, effective July 30. Ahmad, 46, joins Anthelio from McKesson Specialty Health, where he has served as senior VP of information and technology services since August 2010. In 2002, when he was CIO at Columbus-based Ohio State University Medical Center. Ahmad was named as one of Modern Healthcare's Up & Comers. Ahmad replaces Rick Kneipper, Anthelio's co-founder who has served as interim CEO for the past year. Kneipper will stay on at Anthelio as chief strategy and innovation officer and chair of its healthcare innovation council. … Salt Lake City-based healthcare data warehousing and analytics company Health Catalyst hired Scott Holbrook as a strategic adviser. Holbrook, 65, was a co-founder of the health IT research firm KLAS in 1998. Most recently, he was executive VP of Medicity, where he was in charge of customer experience for the provider of health information exchange technology. … GetWellNetwork, which develops systems for interactive patient communications, education and Internet access, named David Bennett executive VP and COO, effective July 1. Before joining the Bethesda, Md.-based company, Bennett, 52, most recently was executive VP at Krames StayWell, another company that develops patient-engagement technology.

WellCare Health Plans named Dr. Steven Goldberg CMO, effective July 8. Goldberg, 52, joins the Tampa, Fla.-based company from Coventry Healthcare of Kentucky, where he was senior medical director. He succeeds Ann Wehr, who joined Miami-based AvMed Plans last October as senior VP and CMO. … Schenectady, N.Y.-based not-for-profit health insurer MVP Health Care named James Poole III VP and CIO, a role he filled on an interim basis since December last year. Before joining MVP Health Care in July 2012, Poole was VP of operations at the Cimino Group, a health IT company based in Woodbridge, Conn. His age was not provided.

Richard Lechleiter, executive VP and CFO for Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare plans to retire Jan. 15, 2014. Lechleiter, 55, has served as Kindred's CFO for more than 11 years, though he first joined the company in 1995. A national search is planned to identify a replacement.

Becton, Dickinson and Co., a medical technology company based in Franklin Lakes, N.J., appointed Christopher Reidy CFO and executive VP of administration, effective July 15. Reidy's responsibilities will include executive management and oversight of BD's global financial operations, shared services and information technology. Reidy, 55, most recently was corporate VP and CFO of ADP, which provides payroll services and administers employee benefits. At BD, he succeeds Suketu Upadhyay, interim CFO since November 2012. Upadhyay will assume the title of senior VP, finance, and will continue to serve as the company's principal accounting officer.
