University Hospital in Newark, N.J., has named James Gonzalez president and CEO, effective July 1.
The appointment of Gonzalez, 59, coincides with University Hospital’s shift to a standalone entity, also effective July 1, after previously being operated by the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
“This is our opportunity to redefine how we execute our mission, how we serve our community, how we showcase the exceptional medicine practiced at our hospital, and how we can explore new opportunities to make University Hospital the gold standard for delivering care and services,” Gonzalez said in a release.
Gonzalez had been acting in an interim capacity as president and CEO of the hospital since July 2011. He also serves as president and CEO of Broadway House for Continuing Care, a Newark facility affiliated with University Hospital that specializes in the treatment of people with HIV/AIDS. Gonzalez brings to the role more than 30 years of experience at major medical centers in the New York metropolitan area, including 14 at University Hospital, which he joined in 1999 as assistant VP of administration.
