Dr. Jo Hannafin has been selected as the first woman to head the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.
Hannafin began her one-year term at the start of July. She is the Rosemont, Ill.-based organization's first female president since the group was founded in 1972. About 5% of the organization's 3,042 members are women. When Hannafin joined the group in 1997, there were 21 female members in the organization.
Hannafin serves as the director of orthopedic research at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. She's also the orthopedic director of the hospital's women's sports medicine center. In addition, she's the team physician for the New York Liberty WNBA basketball team. She is a championship rower and has served as the physician for the U.S. Olympic rowing team.
