Healthsense acquires WellAware Systems

Mendota Heights, Minn.-based Healthsense has added increased monitoring capabilities to technologies it offers to long-term care and other senior-services providers with the acquisition on July 1 of WellAware Systems in Glen Allen, Va.

Healthsense offers a system of Wi-Fi based sensors for remote monitoring of activities, as well as integrated emergency response, vital signs monitoring and wellness management for senior living and managed-care customers. The addition of WellAware should augment the monitoring and analytics tools now available on the Healthsense platform, most notably bringing with it a sleep assessment system to track sleep patterns and provide actionable information to caregivers.

“WellAware's unique monitoring technologies complement our own platform and will ultimately benefit our customers by further enabling more informed and proactive care decisions that drive reduced intervention costs and help them provide superior care,” Healthsense President and CEO A.R. Weiler said in a news release.

“The powerful combination of technology and people created through this merger enables us to provide caregivers with the timely information they need to intervene appropriately, thereby reducing hospitalizations and ER visits and improving the overall quality of life for seniors,” WellAware CEO Teresa DiMarco said in the release.

As the two “consolidate and leverage best practices,” Sarah Jones, product manager at Healthsense, said no staffing cuts are expected, but the combined customer base should grow to about 20,000 people. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Last September, Healthsense announced it had raised $7 million in financing from new investors to expand its remote monitoring platform across the country for the senior care market.
