The American Psychiatric Association has named Dr. Saul Levin to replace retiring CEO and medical director Dr. James Scully.
Since July 2012, Levin has served as interim director of the District of Columbia Department of Health. He's been active with the APA since 1987, when he joined as a member and participated on many APA committees. He was also VP of science, medicine and public health at the American Medical Association.
Levin will start in mid-July and will work with Scully until the fall. Scully, who has filled the CEO and medical director's role for 12 years, announced in 2011 plans to retire. His contract expires at the end of this year.
“I have known Saul for over 20 years,” Scully said in a news release (PDF). “He brings extraordinary intelligence, vision and great energy to the challenges ahead for our profession. I look forward to working together with him as we transition to new leadership.”
Levin's expertise in electronic health information exchanges, the healthcare reform law and meaningful-use requirements impressed the APA board, as well as his interest in mental health issues.
