Despite a 3.2% increase in membership, the American Medical Association's operating profit dropped by nearly 33% last year, which the organization's annual report (PDF) said was due in a large part to “a material decline” in advertising revenue and coding book sales.
As the AMA's overall revenue dropped almost 4% to $273.9 million from $285.3 million, profit dropped down to $16.6 million from the $24.7 million listed in its 2011 annual report. It was still, however, the 13th consecutive year that the AMA finished in the black. Holding the line on general and administrative expenses was cited as a reason for making this positive result, as this budget line increased by only 0.1% to $218 million from $217.7 million. It also reported a $6 million drop in marketing and promotion expenses, with a decline in media buys cited as a major factor in this decrease.
