It's unclear whether Henry Ford's pending merger with Royal Oak's Beaumont Health System, which would create a 10-hospital, $6.4 billion system in Southeast Michigan, played a role in van Grinsven's decision.
Henry Ford Health System will develop an interim organizational structure soon, Riney said in the email.
Van Grinsven joined Henry Ford in 2006 to oversee the launch of the health systems' new hospital in West Bloomfield, which opened in March 2009. Under van Grinsven's leadership, Henry Ford West Bloomfield began a wellness-based philosophy that included a holistic approach to medicine. The nonprofit hospital also hired a resident farmer and opened a 1,500-square-foot greenhouse to grow organic produce for patients on its 160-acre campus in West Bloomfield.
"Gerard's leadership talents and his tremendous global experience made the transformation of this innovation and distinctive vision a reality," Riney told employees in the email.
Prior to Henry Ford, van Grinsven was vice president and area general manager for The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Co.'s hotels in Dearborn, Cleveland, St. Louis and Philadelphia. The Dearborn location has since become The Henry.
He also served in various managerial positions with other hotel groups in Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
