Grossman named CEO at Sense4Baby

Sense4Baby, a San Diego startup medical device company, has named Dr. Jessica Grossman its president and CEO.

Grossman, an obstetrician/gynecologist, most recently served as a medical director at Ethicon Endo-Surgery, a Johnson & Johnson company, where she supported one of its surgical instrument franchises. Grossman, whose age was not immediately available, has also been involved with other startup medical device companies, including Gynesonics. As founder, president and member of the board of directors at Gynesonics, Grossman raised more than $20 million in venture capital financing, as well as invented and helped develop the first intrauterine, ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation device for fibroid tumors.

“Dr. Grossman's medical and professional experience will help guide Sense4Baby's clinical and commercial success,” Nicholas Valeriani, chairman of the board of Sense4Baby and CEO of the West Health Institute, said in a release. The West Health Investment Fund has provided $4 million in funding to Sense4Baby.

Sense4Baby is developing a portable, wireless maternal/fetal monitoring system that uses custom sensors, software and hardware connected to a cellular network for the remote monitoring of mothers with high-risk pregnancies.

“High-risk pregnancies put a tremendous strain on both healthcare systems and families,” Grossman said in the release. “The potential for remote monitoring with the Sense4Baby system is the first step toward technology that could lower costs and improve healthcare for both mothers and infants.”

The system is not yet available for sale in the U.S., as it is pending FDA clearance.
