Shirley Weis, VP and chief administrative officer for the Mayo Clinic, plans to retire by the end of the year. Weis, a former emergency room nurse and a veteran of healthcare management and managed-care operations, joined the Rochester, Minn.-based system in 1995 from the insurer Blue Care Network of Michigan, where she was COO. Weis, 59, this year was named for a second time to Modern Healthcare's list of the Top 25 Women in Healthcare. She was appointed to the Mayo Clinic executive board in 2004 after serving as director of management services, chair of its managed-care department and vice chair of administration for the health system's Arizona operations. … Piedmont Healthcare, Atlanta, named Kevin Brown president and CEO, effective in May. Brown, 46, succeeds R. Timothy Stack, who died July 30 after a brief illness. Dr. Patrick Battey, chairman of the Piedmont Healthcare board of directors, has been serving as interim CEO. Brown currently serves as CEO of Swedish Health Services, Seattle, a position he has held since last year. Swedish appointed Marcel Loh, chief executive of its suburban hospitals and affiliates division, as interim CEO.
