Joseph Swedish resigned from his position as chairman of the Catholic Health Association's board of trustees, a role he has held since June 2012.
On March 25 Swedish assumed leadership of WellPoint, one of the nation's biggest health insurers, after eight years as president and CEO of Trinity Health, a large Roman Catholic health system based in Livonia, Mich.
In his resignation letter to the CHA, Swedish attributed his departure to his obligations at WellPoint that remove him from the daily work conducted by the association and its members, according to a CHA news release.
The association's board elected Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health System in Orange, Calif., as interim chair. Proctor, who had been scheduled to succeed Swedish in the role in June, will start her new responsibilities immediately.
As part of the CHA board since 2006, Swedish has served on various committees, including the executive committee, membership task force, governance committee and community benefit task force. Swedish also chaired CHA's finance committee and its advocacy and public policy committee.
