Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) has scheduled a confirmation hearing next week to consider President Barack Obama's nomination of Marilyn Tavenner to be CMS administrator.
Tavenner, who currently serves as the CMS' acting administrator, is a nurse who spent 25 years of her career working for HCA. She also served for four years as the secretary of health and human resources in Virginia in the administration of Gov. Tim Kaine, a Democrat who is now a U.S. senator for the state. Tavenner joined the CMS in 2010 as principal deputy administrator and became acting administrator in late 2011 after the departure of her predecessor, Dr. Donald Berwick.
