The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Biomedical Informatics announced the appointment of Jiajie Zhang as its new dean, effective March 1.
Zhang, 49, has served as interim dean of the school since former dean Dr. Jack Smith stepped down April 1, 2012. In this role, Zhang directed the school's curriculum redesign, hired additional faculty members and guided a space consolidation plan to facilitate communication and collaboration.
“Not only has Dr. Zhang had a major impact within the School of Biomedical Informatics, but he has also contributed significantly to the other UTHealth schools, the UT System and national programs in the broad area of informatics,” George Stancel, executive VP for academic and research affairs, said in a news release.
Zhang, who holds a doctorate in cognitive science, joined the UTHealth faculty in 1998. He conducts research in biomedical informatics, cognitive science, human-centered computing, medical decision making and information visualization.
The School of Biomedical Informatics is located in the Texas Medical Center, and is the newest of the six schools on the UTHealth campus. It offers several certificate, graduate and doctoral programs.
