What it does: Florida Cancer Specialists is one of the largest privately owned oncology/hematology practices in the U.S., providing cancer care in community-based settings close to patients' homes.
How it grew: Oncology was very different in 1984 when Dr. Bill Harwin founded Florida Cancer Specialists and Research Institute. There were not many options for cancer patients outside of surgery and primitive chemotherapy. In the almost 30 years since, Harwin's company and cancer medicine as a whole have formed an almost symbiotic relationship, each one helping to spur the other forward. Today, the company boasts more than 120 physicians, 70 nurses and 60 clinical sites, and it sits at the cutting edge of new cancer technologies such as molecular targeting and advances in diagnostics.
