How it grew: Founded by physicians in 1991, Emergent Medical Associates has expanded from its first location at Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City, Calif., to encompass 22 hospitals and serve 600,000 patients from San Diego to California's Central Valley.
That growth during the past two decades has come almost completely organically, says CEO James Edwards, who says Emergent “has done very little in terms of business development. Our growth has just been because of our success and our reputation.”
That reputation drove Emergent to expand its practice as an emergency physician group to include hospitalist services with the 2009 launch of Benchmark Hospitalists. “We started our hospitalists organization because our hospitals had enjoyed our partnership so much they asked us to begin managing their hospitalist programs,” Edwards says.
