St. Joseph Health and Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian have received federal antitrust clearance for their plan to form a new regional health system in Southern California. The Federal Trade Commission gave early clearance to the affiliation, in which nine-hospital St. Joseph, Orange, would combine with two-campus Hoag Memorial, Newport Beach.

A news release said each not-for-profit entity would retain its existing identity and faith affiliation—Catholic for St. Joseph and Presbyterian for Hoag. Deborah Proctor, president and CEO of St. Joseph Health, has said previously that the as-yet unnamed new system would form its own board and focus on coordinating healthcare in the region. The new system will include the organizations' hospitals, physician networks, and outpatient and urgent-care centers in Orange County and the High Desert region.
