Rhode Island's attorney general extended through the end of August the closing date for Steward Health Care System's proposed acquisition of Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket, R.I.
Last week, Boston-based Steward had requested that Attorney General Peter Kilmartin waive a condition he set when approving the deal's application in May. The condition had required the deal to close within 60 days.
In a statement released Monday, Kilmartin said he had denied Steward's request to waive the condition but would amend the closing date and extend it to Aug. 31. A spokesman for Steward did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Steward announced plans in mid-2011 to acquire the financially troubled 133-bed hospital.
