Citing declines in reimbursement and mounting charity-care costs, Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Novant Health said it will lay off 289 employees. The 13-hospital system announced the staffing cuts in a memo (PDF) that was also released to local reporters, a spokeswoman said.
In the memo, Carl Armato, Novant Health's president and CEO, said most of the layoffs are in the Winston-Salem and Charlotte markets. Eight-two percent of the eliminated positions are in management, he said.
“For the individuals affected, we're hoping to find other positions within Novant when their skills and training match the 1,300 job opportunities for which we are currently recruiting,” Armato said in the memo. “The overwhelming majority of these job opportunities are clinical and patient care positions.”
