Dr. John Armstrong was appointed Florida's surgeon general and secretary of the state's health department. He starts May 23.
Armstrong is an associate professor of surgery at Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa and chief medical officer for the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation. He also served on the Florida Medical Association's Council on Public Health from 2008 to 2011, according to a news release from Florida Gov. Rick Scott's office.
Armstrong will continue to "develop expertise in military medicine and simulation of battlefield surgery" at the USF simulation center, according to a university news release, which added that an international search will begin for the center's next CMO.
