IHS includes more than 200 physician clinics and employ more than 24,000, the release said. Wellmark covers 1.8 million customers in Iowa and employs 1,707 in the state, according to the company's website. The ACO will include affiliated medical clinics and home care service centers from the Iowa Health System, which counts 10 hospitals in Iowa and one in Illinois. It will also include 362-bed St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 419-bed Iowa Methodist Medical Center and 177-bed Iowa Lutheran Hospital, both in Des Moines; 132-bed Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, Iowa; and 201-bed Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa.
“We're creating a patient experience that is less confusing and more comforting. Less about illness management and more about keeping people healthy,” Bill Leaver, president and CEO of IHS, said in the release. “It's a system where physicians lead not only in the care of patients with acute and chronic illnesses, but also with people who are perfectly well and need the tools to stay that way.”
Earlier, IHS announced that Michael Murphy would head up its ACO.
