Wishard Health Services, the Marion County (Ind.)-owned safety net health system for Indianapolis, and more than 100 primary-care and hospitalist physicians on faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine have formed a new organization: Eskenazi Medical Group. The physicians previously did business as the IU Medical Group-Primary Care.
Wishard, which has a namesake 530-bed hospital and 10 community health centers, will change its name to Eskenazi Health in 2014 after its new Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital opens, according to a news release. The $754 million, 1.2 million-square-foot hospital is expected to be completed in December 2013. It is being named after the couple who donated $40 million toward its construction.
Some published reports had said that the physicians—along with almost 20 physician assistants and nurse practitioners—were "leaving" IU Medical Group, but Dr. John Kunzer, interim CEO for the Eskenazi Medical Group, said that characterization was inaccurate and described the move as a "restructuring."
