“As a healthcare industry spokesman, a finance executive and an HFMA leader, Joe has demonstrated a clear vision for the role that finance professionals play in improving the healthcare system,” Gregory Adams, chairman of the organization for 2011-12, said in an HFMA news release (PDF). “I am confident that Joe will bring the same vision to his position as HFMA president and CEO.”
Fifer, who also writes and speaks on healthcare, joined the more than 38,000-member professional organization in 1983. He served as chairman of the HFMA board in 2006-07 and completed two terms on the board, the release said.
“Finance is in the spotlight as never before,” Fifer said in the release announcing his appointment, “with healthcare organizations challenged to drive down unsustainable costs while improving quality. I am honored to assume this HFMA leadership role at a time when finance professionals can deliver significant industry improvement. HFMA is in an outstanding position to lead these changes because of the foundation built by strong staff leadership, board vision and member commitment.”
Fifer was one of the architects of a 2007 report from the HFMA that urged hospitals to overhaul how they set prices for services with the goal of making them more rational and transparent for patients.
