The Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange will launch an online reporting system and host a series of webinars on problems with implementing the Accredited Standards Committee's X12 Version 5010 standards for the electronic communication of healthcare claims and other administrative transactions.
The compliance deadline for upgrading from the Version 4010 standards to the 5010 standards was Jan. 1, 2012, but the CMS has twice pushed back the date for enforcing compliance—first to March 31, and then to June 30, 2012. Converting to the 5010 standards has been deemed to be a necessary precursor to the adoption of the ICD-10 family of procedural and diagnostic codes. HHS on Monday proposed delaying the compliance deadline for ICD-10 by one year to Oct. 1, 2014. The Version 5010 and ICD-10 upgrades are required under federal rules pursuant to the administrative simplification provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act 1996.
