The Massachusetts Public Health Council approved the merger between the Lahey Clinic, a 327-bed hospital in Burlington, Mass., and the Northeast Health System, Beverly, Mass.
The providers had announced plans to merge and develop an integrated delivery system in July. The Northeast Health System is made up of the 321-bed Beverly Hospital, which includes Addison Gilbert Hospital in Gloucester, Mass.
The Massachusetts Public Health Council approved (PDF) the merger on March 21. The new Lahey Health System will operate in northeastern Massachusetts, beginning May 1, and will employ 1,100 physicians and 10,000 employees, according to a spokeswoman for the Northeast Health System.
Under the state's conditions of approval, which both organizations agreed with, the Northeast Health Systemwill “maintain services at Addison Gilbert Hospital at current levels for a minimum of three years” and also conduct a community needs assessment.
The deal is expected to close at the end of April, according to the Northeast Health spokeswoman.
