Sharecare buys RealAge

Sharecare, an online health and wellness platform co-founded by Dr. Mehmet Oz, has acquired consumer health assessment website RealAge from the Hearst Corp.

The New York-based media company will retain an undisclosed equity interest in RealAge, a spokeswoman said. The companies are also not disclosing financial terms of the deal.

According to a Sharecare news release, 29 million consumers have taken the RealAge test, which estimates an individual's "real age" based on research findings, lifestyle habits and medical history.

"We believe the continued adoption of RealAge as the universal metric for measuring an individual's health progress will help put more accountability into healthcare and enable us to track our collective impact in ultimately reducing chronic disease," Sharecare Chairman and CEO Jeff Arnold said in the release.

Oz and Arnold founded Atlanta-based Sharecare in 2010. Other Sharecare shareholders include Harpo Studios, Remark Media, Sony Pictures Television and Discovery Communications, according to the release.

Scott Sassa, president of Hearst Entertainment & Syndication, will join the Sharecare board of directors.
