ACPE officials said they chose Helen DeVos because of a number of system improvements the hospital implemented during the past four years. For instance, the hospital adopted new patient safety metrics, ramped up staff training and developed a uniform system for identifying and classifying adverse events, ACPE said in the release.
Helen DeVos, which is part of Grand Rapids-based Spectrum Health, also added a number of safety-related components to its residency program, including simulation training, risk management instruction and safety unit rounding.
"Dr. Tom Peterson and his group designed an excellent institutional pediatric patient safety program that has led to measurable improvement in several vital areas of patient care," Dr. Ingram Roberts, ACPE board member and a member of the award selection committee, said in the release. Peterson is the executive director of safety, quality and community health at Helen DeVos.
