Severino, 46, most recently served as VP of global development at Amgen, according to a news release. He replaces Dr. Sean Harper, who was named executive VP of research and development in December. Harper is 49.
“Mike brings broad experience and immense expertise to his new role and I am confident that under his leadership, Amgen's global development team will continue to deliver important new medicines for patients with serious illnesses,” Harper said in the news release.
Severino has held a number of executive positions since he was hired by Amgen in 2004, including senior director of inflammation early development and head of the proof-of-concept group within the medical sciences division. He was named vice president of global development in 2007.
Amgen announced in December that long-time Chairman and CEO Kevin Sharer would retire at the end of 2012. In addition, the company said at that time that Robert Bradway, president and COO, will take over as CEO in May, and Roger Perlmutter, executive vice president of research and development, would retire in February.
