Retail clinic operator MinuteClinic, a division of CVS Caremark, and UMass Memorial Healthcare, a five-hospital system anchored by 706-bed UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, have entered into a clinical partnership.
MinuteClinic, UMass Memorial team up
The arrangement covers the clinic inside the CVS store in Northborough and will include new stores opening in central Massachusetts next year, according to a MinuteClinic news release (PDF). There are 31 MinuteClinic "convenient care" facilities in Massachusetts, including nine that opened in 2011. Retail clinics were not warmly received in Massachusetts, particularly in Boston.
According to the release, UMass Memorial doctors will serve as medical directors of MinuteClinic facilities in Central Massachusetts, and the two organizations will begin integrating their electronic health-record systems, working on patient education and developing disease management initiatives. MinuteClinic recently entered into similar arrangements with 23-hospital Carolinas HealthCare System in Charlotte, N.C., and with Emory Healthcare in Atlanta.
