Retail clinic operator MinuteClinic, a division of CVS Caremark, has entered into a collaboration agreement with the 23-hospital Carolinas HealthCare System that will include Carolinas physicians serving as medical directors at 16 MinuteClinic locations in the Charlotte, N.C., market.

According to a MinuteClinic news release (PDF), MinuteClinic and CHS will also develop a system for the electronic sharing of patient data and "collaborate on patient education and disease management initiatives."
Retail or "convenient care" clinics typically are staffed by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, and have expanded their duties from treating minor wounds and ailments to offering youth physicals and disease-management services—a move opposed by groups such as the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Last month, MinuteClinic entered into a similar arrangement in Atlanta with the Emory HealthCare system, and it expanded into the Charleston, S.C., market during this past summer.
