The Veterans Affairs Department hopes to connect as many as 100,000 staff members at VA medical centers with tablet computers running on all three major operating platforms.
VA plans to acquire tablet devices
A vendor solicitation published on the Federal Business Opportunities website earlier this month details a plan to acquire 60 tablet devices a year. The contract calls for a one-year base period with four one-year options. The government wants iPads running Apple’s iOS system, tablets running Google’s Android OS and devices using Microsoft Windows. They’re asking for 20 tablets of each operating system each year. They also want the vendor to develop an applications store specifically for the VA.
The documents included with the performance work statement detail a bevy of security concerns which they want the vendor to address. Though Apple’s and Google’s operating systems don’t comply with federal wireless standards, after a study VA officials concluded that security for those systems was adequate.
