Humana, Louisville, Ky., continued to expand in the West with the acquisition of MD Care, a company with 15,000 Medicare Advantage HMO members in Southern California. Financial terms weren't released. The signed agreement is subject to federal and state approval and is expected to close later this year. MD Care, established in 2007, generated $155 million in revenue in 2010, according to a news release announcing the deal.
Late News: MD Care acquisition helps Humana's westward push
Based in Signal Hill, Calif., MD Care serves four Southern California counties: Los Angeles County, Orange County, Riverside County and San Bernardino County. Humana counts 4.3 million Medicare members in America, including more than 200,000 in California. Humana was among four insurers who have agreed to contribute more than a decade of claims data to a new not-for-profit institute formed to support research on healthcare spending (See story p. 6).
