PerkinElmer, Waltham, Mass., has signed a definitive agreement to buy life-sciences imaging and detection company Caliper Life Sciences, Hopkinton, Mass., for about $600 million.

PerkinElmer, a technology company focused on human and environmental health, said in a news release that the acquisition has received the unanimous support of the boards of directors of both companies and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of this year. The deal is subject to customary closing conditions including receipt of regulatory approval.
PerkinElmer offers data management software and a range of testing, diagnosis, and information and imaging analysis products.
Caliper CEO Kevin Hrusovsky is expected to join PerkinElmer's management team after the deal closes, according to the release.
