Their objective is to keep their patients as healthy as possible and out of the hospital. It's good for the patients, and good for the bottom line of CMO-Montefiore Care Management. CMO is a for-profit subsidiary of Montefiore Medical Center, the largest healthcare provider in the Bronx, the poorest of New York's five boroughs. CMO receives capitated payments for about 140,000 patients. About 100,000 are covered by private insurance (primarily EmblemHealth, which insures about 2.9 million people in New York state through its two subsidiaries, HIP and GHI), and the other half are split between Medicare and Medicaid managed-care programs.
