Healthcare stocks tumbled in a day when markets failed to recover from an early and sharp drop.
Healthcare stocks lose ground
The Standard & Poor’s 500 finished Thursday down 4.46% and select publicly traded hospital companies plunged with the market. Community Health Systems, Franklin, Tenn., closed the day down 7.92%. Universal Health Services, King of Prussia, Pa., fell 5.08% for the day. Shares for HCA, Nashville, dropped 4.91%.
Among post-acute-care companies Brookdale Senior Living, Brentwood, Tenn., shares fell 6.54% for the day. Select Medical Holdings Corp., Mechanicsburg, Pa., ended the day down 5.3% and HealthSouth Corp., Birmingham, Ala., closed down 4.89%.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the day down 419.63 or 3.68%.
