In addition to leading the largest hospital association in the country, Richard Umbdenstock has some other connections to healthcare that give him added perspective.
Outliers: Umbdenstock's personal perspective
Umbdenstock, the president and CEO of the American Hospital Association, recently told an audience at the annual meeting of the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems in Chicago of his ties to the industry as both the parent of a physician and as the relative of a patient treated by public health providers.
He noted that his oldest child was set to graduate from an anesthesiology residency program, no small accomplishment.
But the second connection to the industry Umbdenstock cited was more unusual, as he said an unidentified relative is homeless and dependent on the public hospital system supported by the audience he was addressing. “We're trying to do our best with support from afar,” Umbdenstock said.
