Spartanburg (S.C.) Regional Healthcare System notified patients in a letter that a computer containing a file with patients' names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and medical billing codes was stolen from an employee's car.
The theft occurred the night of March 28, according to the letter. An investigation is ongoing, and Spartanburg has "taken steps" to enhance its security procedures, the letter noted. The system is offering affected patients free credit-monitoring and ID-theft consultation services.
Spartanburg did not disclose in the letter how many patients were affected.
