Inova Health System, a Falls Church, Va.-based, five-hospital system, is the latest organization to partner with MinuteClinic, the Woonsocket, R.I.-based retail healthcare division of CVS Caremark.
Inova partners with MinuteClinic
MinuteClinic operates 14 in-store healthcare facilities in Inova's Northern Virginia service area, and under terms of the agreement, MinuteClinic will integrate its electronic health-record system with Inova, and—with patient permission—will share patients' medical history and visit summaries with Inova physicians, according to a news release (PDF). Inova and MinuteClinic also will partner on patient education and disease management initiatives. Signs at MinuteClinic locations will alert patients to the business's affiliation with Inova.
MinuteClinic has entered into similar collaborations with Advocate Physician Partners in the Chicago suburbs; Catholic Healthcare West in the Las Vegas and Phoenix metro regions; St. Vincent's Healthcare in Jacksonville, Fla.; and the Cleveland Clinic.
MinuteClinic facilities are staffed by nurse practitioners who conduct physicals, treat minor wounds and infections, administer vaccines, and provide screenings and monitoring for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Retail clinics used to be supported by the American Academy of Family Physicians, but the group withdrew its support when the clinics started providing disease management services for diabetes and hypertension.
