The American Academy of Family Physicians has released a three-page set of guidelines aimed at helping physicians understand the CMS' electronic-prescribing incentive program. According to the AAFP, the clarification is designed to help physicians "both earn an incentive payment and avoid a penalty."
AAFP releases e-prescribing guidelines
Physicians must decide this year whether they will participate in the incentive program. They also need to choose whether they will participate for the first six months of 2011, which will allow them to steer clear of a 1% penalty on 2012 Medicare payments, or whether they will take part for the full 2011 calendar year, which will translate into an incentive of 1% of Medicare payments for the year.
The AAFP's guidance includes a chart that lists the four steps to take to avoid a penalty and the three steps necessary to get the incentive payment. It also includes a list of seven frequently asked questions and offers information on eligible providers and other topics.
