Wennberg and a colleague developed small-area analysis, first published in 1973, a method for determining population-based rates for the utilization and distribution of healthcare services. Large variations were found using this method in healthcare usage in different areas. In trying to determine the reasons for these variations, Wennberg developed techniques to document the results of medical practices, called outcomes research. He also is director of the Center for Evaluative Clinical Sciences at Dartmouth Medical college, as well as a professor in the Community and Family Medicine and Medicine departments. Wennberg currently is looking at using interactive video technology to help patients participate in medical decisionmaking, in addition to work on the Dartmouth Atlas of Heath Care.
