Physician practice acquisitions by hospitals are making a big comeback as future reimbursement schemes will be based on how well hospitals and physicians work together to improve clinical and financial performance. The push is also reflective of the need for physicians to practice in a more predictable economic model and an acknowledged desire by many docs to be free of the administrative burdens of operating as an independent practice. Healthcare went through a similar wave of physician acquisitions in the mid-1990s, but critics of that model say it often proved unworkable when the approach was more about the acquisition than about physician integration.
