While other physicians are selling their practices to healthcare systems, a group of 25 surgeons recently purchased a piece of Rex Healthcare, a subsidiary of the Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care System.
N.C. docs buy stake in Rex Healthcare
The surgeons raised $3,341,500 to purchase a 22% share of the Rex Surgery Center of Cary (N.C.), in a deal that closed March 3.
The subsidiary system is anchored by the 431-bed Rex Healthcare hospital in Raleigh. UNC Health Care is owned by the state of North Carolina, and it is associated with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Medicine. The state’s Research Triangle region has been the arena for an intense struggle between UNC and Raleigh-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals in building competing physician networks.
