Healthcare hiring continued as U.S. employers overall added 192,000 jobs in February, an increase of 0.1%. Unemployment hovered at 8.9% compared with 9% in January.
Hiring continues in healthcare sector
Healthcare added 34,300 workers to payrolls last month, an increase of 0.2%, as hiring bought the sector's overall employment to 13.97 million jobs. The figures, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, are preliminary and seasonally adjusted. In the 12-month period ended in February, healthcare added 277,700 jobs, a 2% gain.
Hospital hiring remained almost unchanged with the addition of 2,100 jobs to bring the total workforce to 4.71 million. During the 12 months ended in February, hospital payrolls increased by 0.8%, or 35,900 jobs.
Physician offices added 1,500 jobs to boost overall employment by 0.1% to 2.33 million. Employment at physician offices has increased by 25,300 jobs, a 1.1% gain, during the 12 months that ended in February.
